TEACHING ENGLISH ONLINE is a rewarding and challenging way to earn a primary income or supplement a full-time job.
Plus you’ll get to reap the many benefits of being a digital nomad: your schedule will be flexible, you can work wherever you have wifi, and you’ll get to meet students from around the world.
Thousands of teachers around the world earn a livable income from the comfort of their own homes. How? By teaching English online!
Online teaching allows people a location-independent lifestyle that is so coveted by those wanting to travel while they work.
Native or Non-native English speaker?
Companies hiring English teachers look for fluid speech, correct grammar, proper pronunciation, and natural intonation that comes from native English speakers. Thus, no matter how good your English might be, if English isn’t your first language you won’t be an eligible applicant for many companies.
But there are exceptions! If you’re a non-native English speaker hoping to find opportunities to teach abroad or online, make sure to check out these suggestions for where to start your search.
These are the THREE things that most recruiters
really want to know.
Are you TEFL or TESOL qualified?
This may sound obvious, but without at least a TEFL or TESOL certificate there won’t be many job opportunities open to you to teach English abroad or Online
Is your CV/Resume up to Scratch?
It may sound obvious, but make sure that your CV has no grammatical or spelling mistakes. If you’re applying for a job teaching English, there are few things more likely to see your CV thrown into the “No” pile than bad grammar or spelling.
Make sure that the layout is clear and easy to read, with your TEFL qualifications and any relevant experience clearly visible and at the top.
Do you have a Fast, Stable, Reliable Internet Connection?
One of the big points people often miss is arguably the most obvious one: you can’t teach online without a speedy and reliable internet connection. Most online teaching needs a minimum of 4 -6mbps. Some people get so excited about working remotely that they forget the need for strong WiFi.
Other items to consider
Other requirements may include (depending on the company)
Having previous teaching experience and having a bachelor’s degree. For most online companies, it doesn’t matter what your degree is in, as long as you have an accredited degree. There are companies that don’t require a bachelor’s degree, but they are becoming the exception rather than the rule. With a large teacher applicant pool, online teaching companies are getting pickier about who they hire.
Ultimately, one can decide to teach online, teach abroad, or both in order to gain more experience and earn more money.
With the world becoming a more connected place, the demand for English speakers and TEFL teachers is at an all-time high.
There are numerous pathways for career advancement. Some of those include (but not limited to) the following options:
One of the natural ways up the TEFL career ladder is to take on a more senior teaching or management role. Many language schools and institutes have senior teacher positions, or positions such as Young Learner Coordinator or Business English coordinator. These can involve anything from helping and advising other teachers, to planning and running TEFL development workshops, to getting involved in the administration and management of a particular type of class, such as Young Learners.
Director of Studies: Moving on up in TEFL career progression, most language schools also have a Director of Studies. This is more of a management role, often involving some or all of the following: Planning and developing the curriculum and individual courses, co-ordinating teaching schedules, running teacher development workshops, recruiting new teachers, meeting and dealing with clients, liaising with the Sales team and school management. Thereafter one can progress into senior management eg: School administrator or School Principal.
Become a TEFL teacher trainer: Teacher training could be a good way to make a more long term career out of TEFL. For TEFL teacher training roles you will need to have some additional training, with an advanced qualification such as the Delta or Trinity DipTESOL
Open your own language school: This has usually been because TEFL teachers love the place they are teaching so much and can’t imagine leaving, but want the autonomy of having their own business. This would require registration as a legal entity and other accreditation compliances.
Get involved in ELT publishing: All those coursebooks, and books full of teaching ideas and supplementary materials that TEFL teachers use when teaching need writing in the first place, and then selling! ELT publishers love to work with teachers with a lot of experience of working in TEFL in different countries, so you can bring your experience and knowledge to their publications.
